Human hair extensions are the hardest to take care of. They not only need special routines but also special hair care products to remain strong, healthy and durable. If you are wearing hair extensions such as closure, frontal, weave or a wig, you are probably advised to use the best products for it. Hair masks are surely one of them. However, “why is it essential to use a hair mask when taking care of human hair extensions?” and “how to do it properly?” may be two of the most frequently asked questions concerning masks. Anka Hair is here to help you understand the need of hair masks in human hair extensions care.

I. Why you should use hair mask

1. Hair extensions are fragile

Hair extensions are fragile

Hair extensions are human hair that are collected directly after being cut off from donors’ heads. When it reaches users’ hands in the form of hair wefts, hair extensions or wigs, the hair still remains its smooth, soft and healthy appearance. However, it is no longer nourished by the scalp and is going to be worn out sooner or later. The hair will lose its natural moisture, become dry and frizzy. If not taken care of carefully, this damage process will come very quickly. That’s why human hair extensions will need all the help from shampoos, conditioners, hair serum and hair masks to maintain its shiny and healthy look.

2. Hair mask are super rich in nutrients and moisture

You may wonder: If my shampoo and conditioner are already nutrient-rich, do I need to use hair masks? The answer is: Yes, you really should use hair masks, too! Shampoo, whatever the composition, is a liquid containing cleaning agents used to cleanse your hair and scalp from sebum, dirt and excess oil. Conditioner, on the other hand, is formulated to make the hair softer, smoother and silkier. The combination of shampoo and conditioner alone can provide needed nutrients and moisture for the hair. However, to enhance the nourishing effect and provide maximum moisture that helps maintain the hair, you will need a hair mask.

Hair mask is like a more intense and concentrated version of conditioner that is super rich in nutrients and moisture. Normally, when being used, the hair mask is left on your hair for a longer period of time, allowing nutrients to be completely absorbed into the cuticle layers of the hair, thereby improving the hair structure from deep within. That’s why hair masks are able to recover the hair whether it is dry, damaged, chemically-dyed, heat-curly or bleached.

II. How to use hair mask and when

Unlike shampoo and conditioner, usually used together every time you wash your hair extensions, hair masks work differently.

1.How often

There is no document or guidance that says you can not use a hair mask daily or every time you wash your hair. However, as concentrated as it is, a hair mask can cause buildup and greasiness quickly if you use it as your daily basis. Ideally, you should use a hair mask once or twice a week in place of or after conditioner.

2.How to use hair mask

  • Always wash your hair with shampoo before using hair mask to get rid of any sebum, dirt and excess oil buildup and prepare the hair for treatment that follows.
  • Use your hand and a soft towel to gently squeeze water out after washing.
  • If your hair extension is removable, take it off and apply a suitable amount of mask on the whole hair. If you are wearing your hair extensions, try not to let the hair mask come into contact with the scalp.
  • Use your finger to comb and massage the hair from root to tip then leave the mask on for 20 – 40 minutes depending on different types of hair masks. You can cover your head with a hot towel to optimize the mask’s effect.
  • Rinse off with cool water and let the hair dry.
